Were the Hawaiian Islands Visited by the Spaniards Before Their Discovery by Captain Cook in 1778?
Published in Hardcover by AMS Press (January, 1977)
Author: Erik W. Dahlgren
Average review score:

Excellent research disproves popular myth
Erik Dahlgren has written a definitive historical analysis that
thoroughly disproves the popular myth that Hawaiian had been
visited and charted by Spanish explorers. This myth was mentioned as fact in W D Alexander's "A Brief History of the Hawaiian People" published over 100 years ago. It was perpetuated by a Spaniard living in Hawaii, Francisco de Paulo
Marin ("manini").
The argument in favor of the Spanish discovery rests in some
part on the Spanish charts which were seized by Anson when he
captured a treasure ship in the Phillipines. Certainly this
chart was known to Cook, and it does show islands at approximately the same latitude as Hawaii, but well to the east
of Hawaii's actual location.
Dahlgren carefully sorts through the facts and demonstrates that
this Spanish chart was not based on any known observattions,
furthermore he shows that the Spaniard who supposedly made the discovery was in fact not even a competent navigator.
It is a serious historical work, carefully written, and 100%
convincing.

A West African Cook Book
Published in Hardcover by M Evans & Co (January, 1972)
Author: Ellen Gibson Wilson
Average review score:

Excellent book of West African Recipes and Gastronomy
Ellen Gibson Wilson first encountered African food when she married a British man who had lived in Western Africa. "A West African Cook Book: Good Food From Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone" is an excellent cookbook, one of the best African cookbooks ever. By focusing on these four countries Ms. Wilson has produced a wonderful book, probably better than if she had tried to cover the entire continent (as many African cookbooks try to do). It contains not only 150 recipes, but also lots of information about cooking, food, and life which helps put the recipes into a cultural context. It is a pity it has been out of print; it is highly recommended and worth searching for.

Chapters include: "In Praise of Pepper and Other Characteristics of West African Food"; "A Simple Guide to Ingredients"; "Cooking the West African Way"; and "Eating the West African Way". Recipes are categorized in these chapters: "Classic Main Dishes"; "Classic Staple Dishes"; "Other Main Dishes"; Other Side Dishes"; "Starters"; "After Chop"; "Small Chop"; "Drinks"; "Some Feasts and Rituals". Many recipes appear in variations from two or more of the four countries featured in this book. The book includes a bibliography of rare African cookbooks and journal articles.

The Wide World Dreaming
Published in Paperback by Breakwater Books Ltd (10 December, 2000)
Author: JoAnne Soper-Cook
Average review score:

Napoleon Tells It Like It Is
JoAnne Soper-Cook in her novel of love, lust and power spins the tale of the life of Napoleon from his birth to his imprisonment on St. Helena. This is the first novel about Napoleon that I've read where the point of view was his own thoughts.

I'm all for this courageous contemporary adult (naughty) fiction take on this historical character (maybe you don't know as much as you think you do about Monsieur Bonaparte). Well Done and an enjoyable, intellectually challenging read.

The book itself is quality trade work, handsomely designed and easy to read. A fine example of a small press (Breakwater) accomplishing a big book.
